A three-person studio utilizes AI in Fortnite to recreate Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, allowing fans to craft and share interactive narratives.
A three-member studio, Whenere, is transforming Netherfield Park from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice into an interactive experience within Fortnite, focusing on historical accuracy down to the finest details.
Founded by science fiction author Neal Stephenson and seasoned game artist Karen Laur, Whenere is collaborating with Dreamlands, an AI company leveraging Google’s Gemini models. Their objective is to create a digital stage for fan fiction by accurately reconstructing Mr. Bingley’s Netherfield Park from the novel’s opening chapters.
Engaging the Creative Community
Whenere envisions a platform where users can script scenes using a web-based editor, then witness characters come alive in the game. With Dreamlands’ technology, much of the furniture and decor is generated in a way that not only preserves historical authenticity but also enhances the creative process. Laur elaborated on the studio's mission, saying, "We started Whenere to bridge the gap between envisioning a story and experiencing it in a 3D space." Once created, these fan stories can be shared live or recorded for later viewing.
The approach is intentionally linear, structured more like “build your own adventure” as opposed to a traditional choose-your-own-path format. The gameplay, as Laur humorously notes, won’t feature any combat, with the only “cutting” stemming from the sharp wit of Lizzy Bennet.
A Long-standing Partnership and Vision
The collaboration between Stephenson and Laur dates back 16 years. Laur’s career trajectory—from texture artist on Half-Life to art director—has uniquely positioned her to lead Whenere. In contrast, Stephenson’s background as a world-builder and writer amplifies their shared vision. “It feels like we’ve been evolving toward this moment for a long time,” Laur remarked, emphasizing that their research phase is finally materializing.
Nonetheless, gathering the necessary resources to build an expansive world based on Austen’s works has been a considerable challenge. Laur expressed that funding remains a substantial hurdle: "To create a full environment to tell the story, we require significant financial backing, which leaves us in a catch-22 situation." This funding scenario grows especially complex when the project demands thousands of meticulously crafted assets.
AI as a Tool for Creative Efficiency
Recognizing the complexity of their endeavor, Whenere turned to Dreamlands to simplify the asset creation process. The startup excels in generating 3D assets that are editable from images and text inputs. According to CEO Thomas Tobin, the software allows tasks that used to take weeks to condense into a click. The ability to specify furniture creations by simply clicking and selecting finishes dramatically accelerates the production timeline. “That would have taken months of work,” he noted.
Consistency across assets is critical for the visual design. Laur explained that without such tools, artists risk inconsistent tones and styles, adding a burdensome layer of manual adjustments. The output from Dreamlands ensures aesthetic uniformity, simplifying the design process. Laur indicated that applying a new texture takes about seven seconds and costs under ten cents, allowing for agile iteration without the constraints of typical development timelines.
A Broader Vision Beyond Austen
Whenere's aspirations extend past just a Pride and Prejudice replication; Laur envisions a platform that enables diverse world-building without necessitating large budgets or extensive timelines. The choice of Austen reflects both practical and thematic reasons: her works are public domain, eliminating costly rights negotiations while tapping into a rich area of fan fiction.
Stephenson also noted the advantage of drawing from historical contexts, as they provide ample reference materials for artists. “Many of my own works are entangled in Hollywood rights issues,” he remarked, underscoring the need for independent exploration free from traditional constraints.
Every aspect of the project is infused with a commitment to authenticity. Laur's previous career in high-end wallpaper design fuels her meticulous attention to detail in recreating Netherfield Park. “A Regency house needs a Regency chair,” she asserted, further underscoring her dedication to period accuracy.
Enhancing Creative Control with AI
The consensus among the team and collaborators is that AI's role is to alleviate the burdens of repetitive tasks, allowing creative professionals to focus on higher-level skills. Jack Buser, Google Cloud's global director for games, emphasized that cutting down on tedious work can keep promising ideas afloat. “Retaining creative control is the point,” he stated, hinting at the potential for smaller teams to deliver significant outcomes.
Such agility in production fosters an environment where iterative improvements are not just feasible but encouraged. As Stephenson noted, "Being able to refine a component for just ten cents can be a transformative capability." The duo highlights that AI should serve to enhance creativity, rather than replace it.
Looking Ahead
With significant work ahead, Whenere plans to capture a fuller representation of Austen's world, including a bustling market town and a wide array of characters. Adding more public-domain works to their roster remains a long-term goal. Stephenson anticipates that these advances might pave the way for fans and creators to navigate around Hollywood's formidable barriers, empowering them to explore their favorite literary universes and weave their narratives.

Meanwhile, Dreamlands is set to make its public debut on the Google Cloud Marketplace, marking a significant moment in the intersection of AI, gaming, and creative storytelling.
