Published Sep 10, 2026 Reads 773 By Richard Smith

The latest Unearthed Arcana offers fresh subclasses and species inspired by the Underdark, inviting players to shape their adventures in the depths.

This latest installment of Unearthed Arcana introduces new playtest material centered around the Underdark, expanding upon themes from previous updates. Featuring unique subclasses and species that dwell beneath the surface, the content invites players to immerse themselves in the darker aspects of Dungeons & Dragons gameplay.

The material leverages rules already established in the Player’s Handbook while allowing for deeper exploration of the Underdark, one of D&D’s iconic settings. D&D’s Game Design Team has crafted this playtest to gather feedback and enhance gameplay experiences. You can access the full playtest document directly through this PDF and provide your insights via a survey.

Highlights of the New Options

What stands out in this playtest are the fresh subclasses and species, many of which haven’t been featured in previous Unearthed Arcana releases. Notably, the update includes an incarnation of the Circle of Spores Druid, which first appeared in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything but has now been refined for the current ruleset.

New Subclasses to Explore

This segment introduces three new subclasses that enhance the creative toolkit for players:

  • Freedom Domain
  • Circle of Spores
  • Faerzress Sorcery

Each subclass offers unique abilities and mechanics, aimed at providing varied gameplay experiences.

Freedom Domain

The Freedom Domain is designed as a high-Dexterity Cleric subclass. Drawing inspiration from earlier editions, including the Freedom Domain in D&D 3e, its design revolves around spells and abilities that could assist in jailbreak scenarios. This subclass features a spell list that emphasizes mobility and utility for both the Cleric and their allies.

One notable mechanic is the Channel Divinity feature, providing a unique Freedom of Movement effect that remains relevant beyond situations involving grappling, ensuring its utility in various circumstances.

Circle of Spores

The Circle of Spores has undergone significant reworking for this version. With its origin tied to Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica, the updated subclass now includes features like Telepathy, closely tying it to the myconids of the Underdark. The revisions to this subclass enhance its connection to combat, urging Druids to engage actively while utilizing abilities to control the battlefield through spores.

Faerzress Sorcery

Faerzress, a mysterious energy within the Underdark, serves as a basis for this subclass. Sorcerers linked to Faerzress exhibit abilities that allow them to manipulate this energy for unique effects such as blocking teleportation and enhancing darkvision. The subclass leans heavily into lightning damage and culminates in an impressive transformation into faerzress energy, providing a distinctive gameplay experience compared to traditional Sorcerers.

New Species for Adventurers

This Unearthed Arcana also includes five new species, moving beyond the familiar races of Drow and Duergar to introduce characters that thrive in the Underdark:

  • Deep Imaskari
  • Drider
  • Illithidkin
  • Kuo-toa
  • Myconid

Deep Imaskari

The Deep Imaskari trace their lineage back to humans, possessing traits that reflect their origins but notably differ due to their connection to Unlight. Instead of typical darkvision, these characters generate light as they navigate the shadows of the Underdark, creating intriguing gameplay opportunities.

Drider

Driders blend the characteristics of drow and spider, resulting in a formidable presence. The design of this character type aims to retain the essence of the classic drider while making them manageable for player use, drawing mechanical inspiration from centaurs, enhancing their role as deadly hunters.

Illithidkin

Illithidkin represent characters subjected to mind flayer experiments, affording them a series of psionic abilities distinct from the previous Ceremorphosis feat path. This species highlights different player interactions with mind flayers, offering unique thematic and mechanical gameplay options.

Kuo-toa

Kuo-toa are enchanted by their worship of bizarre deities, often creating vibrant idols from a mishmash of objects. Playing as a kuo-toa grants characters access to the Find Familiar spell, allowing them to blend their magical bonds with quirky customizations that resonate well within the theme of the Underdark.

Myconid

The myconids, organisms rooted in fungal life, are engineered for adventure in this latest UA iteration. As adventurers, myconids not only serve as characters but as a narrative vehicle that emphasizes building team cohesion and knowledge exchange without words—a delightful twist on traditional roleplay.

Your Feedback is Valuable

As this new content rolls out, the design team eagerly seeks player feedback on the mechanics and themes presented. Once players have had a chance to engage with the material, a survey will be available for insights and suggestions—essential for refining these options to enhance future gameplay experiences.

Connect with the ever-expanding world of Dungeons & Dragons through these new character options, and help shape your collective adventures beneath the surface.
