At Tokyo Game Show, Critical Reflex showcased four intriguing indie titles that promise to engage gamers with their unique themes and gameplay mechanics.

Established six years ago, publisher Critical Reflex has built an eccentric catalog, attracting attention with its distinct indie games. Notably, the recent release of Mouthwashing has made a significant splash in the industry, alongside titles like Buckshot Roulette and Arctic Eggs. At this year's Tokyo Game Show, I spent a couple of hours at the Critical Reflex booth, styled like a vibrant underground neon-punk den, where I sampled four titles that captivated my interest, despite one being so offbeat that it caused quite a reaction.
Tiny Chills – Not From Ears
Tiny Chills – Not From Ears
Tiny Chills – Not From Ears stands out from the crowd at TGS, if only for the visceral response it elicits. Developed by Docktopus Games, this horror-themed title plunges players into a small town plagued by constant earthquakes and mysterious disappearances. As a headstrong character suspended from school, players find themselves stuck at home, unwittingly assisting at their mother's ear-cleaning clinic. Through a mix of tools, players delve into the grotesque depths of patients' ear canals, extracting not only wax and grime but the occasional unsettling creature.
The game's ambiance echoes a Coraline-inspired eeriness, with an aesthetic that feels bleak and foreboding. The clinic's atmosphere adds to the tension; patients knock frantically at the door as they seek relief, their pleas resonating with urgency. From a first-person perspective, players must navigate this unsettling world, balancing the gross-out factor with an engaging narrative premise.

The ear-cleaning mechanics are truly off-putting, yet compelling: manipulating suction devices and hooks to clear disturbing blockages creates a horror experience that’s visceral and, honestly, a bit repulsive. Yet, there’s something compelling driving players to explore further, as the story hints at deeper strangeness underlying the protagonist's everyday reality.
Grobnopolis | Last Days
Grobnopolis | Last Days
Grobnopolis | Last Days introduces players to a haunting narrative set in Huta-Grobno in the year 1983. As the caretaker of a rundown apartment building, players are tasked with navigating a reality clouded by thick smoke and whispers of catastrophe stemming from local mines. Within the confining walls of solitude, they encounter various objects that peel back the facade of their grim environment.
The radio serves as an eerie conduit to uncovering the intensity of the situation. As players tune in, they’re privy to strange opera music, disconcerted workers’ conversations about the mining incident, and broadcasts hinting at local cult activity and forthcoming peril. This uneasy atmosphere sets the stage for a narrative thick with mystery, where controlled chaos mingles with mundane daily tasks.

The deteriorating environment foreshadows something amiss. In search of supplies for various tasks, players must brave the ominous hallways, while a crack in the kitchen grows, hinting at deeper horrors below the surface. The game’s Steam description tantalizingly introduces "Soup," a darkly mysterious ichor that threatens to engulf the apartment and suggests a sinister narrative yet to be unveiled.
Sated
Sated
Among the highlights, Sated emerges as a sellable concept blending roguelite mechanics with culinary horror. Players quickly find themselves taking orders from an imposing mechanical shark demanding bizarre culinary creations. The randomness of ingredient selection from a fridge that operates like a slot machine introduces a unique twist; players are challenged to guess the right proportions rather than following strict recipes.
The scoring system after each meal reveals the dangerous stakes: failing to please the customer results in an unexpectedly gruesome demise. This relentless cycle keeps players engaged, driven by the desire to succeed in a thrilling blend of cooking and survival that’s bound to make a mark.
Flawless Abbey
Flawless Abbey
Flawless Abbey presents a captivating dichotomy of surreal beauty and unsettling mystery. Within this vibrant yet enigmatic space, players take on the role of a dreamseeker, navigating through a facility that allows glimpses into the dream-tower. Engaging environmental puzzles woven throughout the dream experience challenge players to uncover deeper truths while grappling with a narrative that seems to defy comprehension.
The visuals throb with color and inspiration, simultaneously evoking a sense of intrigue and existential dread. Players interact with other dreamseekers, their conversations feeling like cryptic explorations into the players’ psyches. With corporate benefits and unsettling subplots at its core, Flawless Abbey is a title that invites contemplation and encourages players to dissect what lies underneath its vibrant exterior.
The various elements presented throughout Critical Reflex's collection at TGS elicit excitement for the gaming community. Each title offers potential for significant engagement, urging players to explore unique narratives filled with both light and dark themes. Whether navigating the grotesque world of Tiny Chills or unraveling the mysteries of Grobnopolis and Flawless Abbey, there's no shortage of intrigue in what lies ahead for these indie games.
