Qualcomm and MediaTek's latest chipsets promise significant performance enhancements and energy efficiency, with devices launching globally this October.

Comparing Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro: What to Expect

Qualcomm and MediaTek have rolled out their latest flagship chipsets, set to feature in devices scheduled for release in October 2023. Phones like the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max, Vivo X500 Pro Max, and the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max are already making their debut in China and will see a global rollout shortly.

Qualcomm has gone bold with its naming, branding this year's chipset as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. MediaTek opted for a straightforward approach, simply adding a "Pro" tagline to its Dimensity 9600 chipset. Both companies are transitioning to a 2nm manufacturing process, a move that marks an advancement from the previous 3nm node seen over the last few years. This shift to TSMC’s 2nm process is expected to yield substantial performance improvements, with both platforms featuring LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage technology.

Powerful CPU Architecture

Qualcomm continues to serve up its custom-core designs, ramping core frequencies to as high as 5GHz for the two main cores. The classic 2+6 core setup comprises six Performance cores clocking up to 4.0GHz, accompanied by a substantial 16MB cache. Qualcomm is touting a 13% increase in performance thanks to these new cores, alongside a notable 37% improvement in energy efficiency.

On the flip side, MediaTek is employing Arm’s latest cores within its unique 2+3+3 architecture. This includes two C2-Ultra cores running at 4.55GHz paired with six C2-Pro cores, which are split into two clusters: one peaking at 4.35GHz and the other at 3.1GHz. MediaTek claims a 17% performance uplift this year, asserting a significant 61% increase in energy efficiency for multi-core tasks and a 37% boost in single-core performance, promising noticeable benefits in everyday usage.

GPU Evolution with Neural Technology

The competition between Qualcomm and MediaTek extends into the GPU sphere, where traditional assumptions may no longer hold. Qualcomm's new Adreno matrix cores are aimed at enhancing gaming experiences with claimed performance improvements of 44% and energy efficiencies of up to 40%. However, how well these claims translate into real-world gaming scenarios remains to be seen.

MediaTek is incorporating its own advancements with the Mali-G2-Ultra-NX GPU. The company reports a 27% boost in performance and a 24% improvement in efficiency under load, bolstered by a commitment to apply neural graphics technology. Given prior overheating issues with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices, it will be crucial to monitor how the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 fares in thermal management compared to MediaTek's historically better performance.

Advancements in Imaging Technology

Qualcomm has maintained a strong reputation for its image signal processors (ISPs), introducing features like 3K60 video capture, ultra-low-light capabilities at 4K60, and high-frame-rate slow-motion at 4K240 this year. It remains uncertain if manufacturers will fully exploit this feature set, but the potential is substantial.

Meanwhile, MediaTek has made notable gains in imaging technology thanks to collaborative efforts with brands like OPPO and Vivo. Their new platform supports an impressive 8K60 video, 4K240 slow-motion, and advanced NPU integration, which positions it competitively against Qualcomm’s offering. The consistency and capabilities offered by both chipsets indicate that strong performance in imaging is a shared objective.

Devices Hitting the Market Soon

The respective flagship devices from OPPO and Vivo are set to launch globally in October. While Xiaomi has yet to confirm the international release date for the 18 Pro, it is likely to appear before the year concludes, with plans to enter the Indian market as well.

Interestingly, U.S.-based Motorola is launching the Signature 27, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6—scheduled for release ahead of the holiday shopping season. As these devices roll out, they promise to showcase the differences against not just 2026’s flagships, but older models, enabling users to truly assess the strides made in mobile processing and graphics.

Expect hands-on reviews of these new devices soon after their launch, revealing their real-world performance and whether the specs translate into better user experiences.
